Mental Blocks Workshop - 2 Day Workshop  Sept 23-24

Workshop Description: “Everything we care about lies somewhere in the middle, where pattern and randomness interlace” –James Gleick

In this fast paced two-day workshop we are going to take control of the chaos, magically weaving together fragments of photos, symbols, and words to create a mosaic of mixed media blocks.  Can’t seem to find your muse? No problem, all along the way we’ll be conquering our mental blocks through a series of fast and fun creativity exercises. Each rectangle takes you through an artistic story of its own…an individual tidbit of information, but where this journey becomes interesting is when the pieces are puzzled together.  Students will bring together a variety of images and ideas from a variety of sources and harmonize them.  The chaos…suddenly meaningful.  Randomness…suddenly full of purpose.

Some of the specific skills we’ll be tackling in this workshop include:

-paint techniques, choosing colors, mixing colors, and combining paint with collage objects.

-collage techniques

-combining elements from discordant sources and creating a unified composition

-related several small collages into a larger cohesive narrative

-exercises to overcome “mental blocks”

-creative juxtapositions to jumpstart creativity

Supply List:

6-9 Wood Blocks measuring approximately 6”X8” (cradled wood panels about 1.5” thick that are 6”X8” work great) –can’t find the exact size, no problem you can work on squares, or a different sized blocks that are similar dimensions (eg. 5”X7” or 6”x6”, you can even come with a unique collection of sizes and shapes if you wish)

3 pieces of white matte board (8”x10”) – you should be able to find these pretty inexpensively at Michaels or any art store that does framing.
