Michael deMeng and Andrea Matus are heading to Portland Oregon to add a little bit of their artistic twists to the city of coffee, beer and weirdness. The will be hosting two art workshops focusing on painting, collage and assemblage. Michael's workshops will bring out your inner beasts, while Andrea's will explore ways to amuse your Muse. A week of yins and yangs awaits.
The workshop will be held at the inspiring Arcangelo Productions, the studio of artist, Stacey Mattraw. Stacey has hosted art retreats for Michael DeMeng Andrea Matus and other nationally and internationally renowned artists over the years both in Cortona, Italy and the island of Bali. She has recently acquired this inspiring studio space in North Portland to make art, hold workshops and host visiting artists.
The studio is housed in a fantastic 100 year old warehouse space, that has been recently refurbished into artist and makers studios, close to the Fremont and Broadway bridges off N. Interstate. Directions will be sent upon enrolment. There will be a 1 1/2 hour lunch break each day. There is a New Seasons Grocery store 5 minutes away where you can get both hot and cold prepared food and just about any food/drink item imaginable. You are welcome to stay at the studio and work during lunch break as well.
We can’t wait to have you with us!
Beastly Busts with Michael deMeng

Beastly Busts Workshop (2 Days - Sept 21-22)
Many of the influences in my artwork are stories from childhood. These are often filled with magic and wonder along with a cast fantastical creatures and improbable characters. As of late, I've been particularly intrigued by the human animal hybrids of storyland. Characters like the White Rabbit and the Caterpillar of Alice in Wonderland, or the Three Little Pigs and Big Bad Wolf all reside in a strange world where the beasties act, talk and dress like humans.
In this workshop, we are going to create mixed-up beastly busts and magical menageries. Students will gather up a variety of human and animal figurines and we will reimagine them into unusual creations. They will then be displayed on a small shrine or plaque. When you're done they will be, as Tony the Tiger says: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!
In this class, we will explore a variety of techniques ranging from sculpture to assemblage to painting, and use a variety of materials to unify a variety of found objects into a cohesive piece of art. This workshop is for ALL LEVELS.
Mental Blocks with Andrea Matus

Mental Blocks Workshop - 2 Day Workshop Sept 23-24
Workshop Description: “Everything we care about lies somewhere in the middle, where pattern and randomness interlace” –James Gleick
In this fast paced two-day workshop we are going to take control of the chaos, magically weaving together fragments of photos, symbols, and words to create a mosaic of mixed media blocks. Can’t seem to find your muse? No problem, all along the way we’ll be conquering our mental blocks through a series of fast and fun creativity exercises. Each rectangle takes you through an artistic story of its own…an individual tidbit of information, but where this journey becomes interesting is when the pieces are puzzled together. Students will bring together a variety of images and ideas from a variety of sources and harmonize them. The chaos…suddenly meaningful. Randomness…suddenly full of purpose.
Some of the specific skills we’ll be tackling in this workshop include:
-paint techniques, choosing colors, mixing colors, and combining paint with collage objects.
-combining elements from discordant sources and creating a unified composition
-related several small collages into a larger cohesive narrative
-exercises to overcome “mental blocks”
-creative juxtapositions to jumpstart creativity
