Michael deMeng: Postmodern Shrines and Assemblages

workshop mumbo jumbo OR: Don't throw that away!  It could be made into something cool!

about the workshops
My classes are explorations of the processes of assemblage and the use of found objects in art.  These classes involve transforming discarded materials into something meaningful and even sacred.  Sample classes are:  Pez Dispensing Totems, Sardine Can Nichos, Shoe Shrines, Mixed Media Polaroids, Contemporary Ex Votos, plus many many more (I'm always thinking of fun and funky things to do in a class.)

Basic supply list

1. Scissors and cutting tools

2. Drawing tools- pens, pencils, pastels et

3. Brushes (acrylic).

4. Acrylic Matte Medium – or any adhesive for collage

5. Paint (acrylic- small tubes):

6. A few different kinds of glues . Epoxy and Liquid Nails

7. Small do dads, found objects, collage items and photos.

-Bring various item that you would like to use on your shrine - this could be anything! - (jewelry, fake flowers, price tags, watch parts, shoelaces, fake eyelashes etc.)  As I said, anything.  Remember, smaller objects or items that can be broken down would be most appropriate .  We'll have a communal pile of do-dads that students are willing to share with others in the class...so, looks like it's time to clean out those dresser drawers

A typical class day is roughly 6 hours long, give or take.  The classes can be one day or multiple day workshops depending on the nature of the class.   Allowing that there is enough space for everyone to work comfortably, I can instruct up to 30 students in a class.

That said, it is my understanding that you will make every effort possible to gather the most amount of attendees for my workshop. I will publicize the workshop on email lists that I belong to and on my web site.

workshop rates:

There are a few options but here's my standard rate         $85 per student, per day + expenses * (listed below).

12 student per day minimum.

*travel expenses
To locations where driving is an option: $0.40 per mile, roundtrip from my home to the teaching destination. Driving distance not to exceed 6 hours one way. Then air travel will be necessary.   To locations where air travel is necessary: Roundtrip coach-class airline tickets, as well as any shuttle or rental car costs incurred. I will book my airfare early and will do everything within reason to get the lowest fare possible.

*meals
Two meals per day when teaching,

*lodging
Private accommodations in a motel or hotel. For Montana locations, a hotel stay may not be necessary -- if I can travel to your location and back home the same day I will.

policies
It is my policy, that I wouldn't do any competing workshops in your city for at least 3 months. I would come for only your workshop and then return home. This should keep the class size to a robust amount of attendees. Because I ask that my travel expenses be paid, I feel that not doing any competing workshops in the same trip, is only fair to you.

I can conduct 1, 2 or 3 day workshops to any level of student: beginner, intermediate or advanced. When I teach out of the state of Montana, at least 2 workshop days must be booked.

contract
Once you decide that you'd like to have me come and teach a workshop for you, and the dates have been chosen, I will send you a simple agreement outlining the dates and fees that we have agreed upon. You will sign both copies, keep one for your records and return the other copy to me.
