Once upon a time… well you know what the opening means. It means that a wonderously, wild wierd adventure awaits. Let’s explore the world of fairytales but we are going to do it using found objects instead of a book. Imagine story panels suspended from a wooden plaque, each panel a portal into a different realm of the fairy tale. Maybe you’ll be transported to the various cozy cottages, or maybe a journey from the magic beans up the beansprout to the giants realm of Jack and the Beanstalk. This online workshop is designed for students to progress at their own pace. All instructional videos will be released on June 29th. While the class is not live, it includes interactive elements like weekly Q&A sessions and a final Zoom Critique.

Q and A Sessions - These run live on a Private Facebook Group (if you can’t participate you can post questions ahead of time and rewatch at a later time…it will be recorded. Dates of Q and A are June 29, July 6th, July 13th, July 20th, July 27th

Zoom Critique - On August 3 will host a Live Zoom Crit. If you choose to participate post images of your class creations and we will take a peek!

Class Structure:

  1. Once Upon a Time in Assemblage Art: Delve into the process of assemblage art and learn how to use this medium as a storytelling device.

  2. Quest for the Perfect Fairy Tale: Set forth on a quest to discover the ideal fairy tale for your creative endeavor. Whether it's a beloved classic or a hidden gem, each student will select their own tale to reimagine through the lens of assemblage art.

  3. Map Out Your Magical Journey: Armed with imagination and inspiration, students will sketch, plan, and plot the layout of their story panels.

  4. Gather Ye Materials: Embark on a crafting quest like no other as you scour thrift stores and unearth treasures to populate your fairy tale kingdom. Collecting a variety of materials and found objects, students will prepare for the construction of their masterpiece.

  5. Build Your Fairy Tale Kingdom: With Dremel and glue in hand, students will layer panels upon panels, constructing a wondrous world of wonder and whimsy.

  6. Sculpting and Moldmaking: Sometimes the a little clay and some sculpting skill come in handy. Also learn how you use molds to duplicate precious objects.

  7. Textures of the Tale: The forest is filled with wild textures from the mystical fairytale world. Students will explore a variety of ways to make different surfaces.

  8. Paint Techniques to Pull it Together: Explore the transformative power of paint as you bring your assemblage masterpiece to life. Learn how to use painting techniques to unify disparate elements, create cohesion, and enhance visual impact.

  9. Add a Dash of Magic: No fairy tale is complete without a sprinkle of magic! Students will embellish their creation with sparkling accents and mystical final touches, infusing every detail with enchantment and allure.

  10. Tales of Triumph: Time to get you story ready for the world. Learn how to prepare it for installation.

  • What will happen after I sign up? I will send you the codes and links to get you started.

  • What is the FaceBook Group? You can asks questions, share images and share ideas.

  • How long can I access the videos? Forever and ever. You will have to ability to download the videos right to your computer.

  • Does this have a live component? While the class is not live, it includes interactive elements like weekly Q&A sessions and a final Zoom Critique.

  • How does it differ from a live class? There isn't the one-on-one component and the possibility for immediate feedback that you have in a live class, but you have the advantage of being able to get into much more in-depth explanations of technique. Also, the advantage of being to replay any section that you need a refresher on.

  • Will there be video? Yes. There will be roughly about 300 minutes of protected video that only students will be able to access.

  • How many videos will there be? I'm expecting there to be 22 chapters.

  • Is the class segmented or do I get everything at once? I have designed the class so you will have access the information at once and can play with it as you like, at your own speed.

  • Is there anyway to connect and share with other students enrolled? Yes. A Facebook Group will be set up specifically for this workshop.

  • What kind of site is being used to host this class? I am using a protected website as well as a protected video host.

  • How will I access the website? When class begins I will send out passwords to all the students.

  • Is this for Beginners or Advanced students? It's for everyone. I've made it so it is information that can be used by all levels.

  • Will it be entertaining? Geez, I hope so. I have done my best to make it very un-dry and fun.

  • What will I need to be able to watch the videos? If you can read this the information on this website and have the ability to watch videos on vimeo.com then you've got everything you need to be able to watch the videos.
